Rocking a grid system is a quick way to offer solid content structuring but is isn’t something every project needs, go custom as much as you can, if you adopt a grid system for a project, learn it well and customize it 960gs is the thinnest I’ve found http://960.gs/ the CSS file is only 3.6KB and is wicked flexible!
What about my personal favorite, 960 no-grid ?
